💙 Why “Supportive” Doesn’t Always Mean “Fixing” Someone’s Problems

October 15th, 2024

When someone we love is hurting, our natural instinct is to jump in and fix things. We want to ease their pain, solve their problem, or offer a quick solution. While this comes from a place of love, being “supportive” doesn’t always mean taking over or fixing everything.

True support often looks different and sometimes, it means simply being present.

The Pressure to “Fix”

Many of us feel pressure to provide answers when a friend, partner, or family member is struggling. We may think:

  • If I can solve this, they’ll feel better.
  • If I don’t help, I’m letting them down.
  • What kind of friend/partner/parent would I be if I didn’t fix this?

But constantly trying to “fix” can unintentionally make the other person feel unheard or invalidated. It shifts the focus away from their emotions and onto your solution.

What Support Really Means

Being supportive isn’t about having all the answers it’s about creating space where someone feels safe to share, process, and just be.

Here are some ways support can look without fixing:

  • Listening without judgment – Sometimes, people just need to vent and feel understood.
  • Offering comfort, not solutions – A hug, a kind word, or quiet presence can mean more than advice.
  • Asking what they need – Try: “Do you want advice, or do you just want me to listen?”
  • Respecting their process – Healing and problem-solving take time. Trust their ability to find their own path.

Why This Matters for Mental Health

When we stop trying to fix and start truly listening, we give our loved ones the gift of validation. They feel seen, valued, and capable of facing challenges in their own way.

This shift also relieves pressure on us. It reminds us that we don’t have to carry the weight of everyone else’s struggles we just need to show up with empathy.

A Gentle Reminder

Support doesn’t always mean swooping in with answers. Sometimes the most loving thing you can do is simply sit beside someone, listen, and remind them they’re not alone.

If you or someone you care about is struggling with anxiety, stress, or relationship challenges, therapy can provide a safe, supportive space to work through it together.
