Personal Summer "Me Time": Why It's Essential for Your Mental Health

As summer arrives, calendars quickly fill up with vacations, family visits, kids’ activities, and social events. While it’s a season full of energy and connection, many people forget to take time for the most important person themselves.

At In My Heart Psychology and Counseling, we encourage all of our clients to create space for what we call “personal summer me time” a time to reset, recharge, and prioritize your mental health.

Why "Me Time" Is More Than a Luxury — It's a Necessity

Personal time is essential to maintain emotional balance and avoid burnout. It's in those quiet moments of reflection that we regain clarity, strengthen our resilience, and tune into what we really need. Yet, many people feel guilty for slowing down especially caregivers, professionals, and those used to putting others first.

But here’s the truth: You cannot pour from an empty cup.

Taking 15 to 30 minutes a day to do something just for yourself reading, journaling, walking, meditating, or even sitting in silence can:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Improve your mood
  • Boost your creativity
  • Strengthen your ability to manage conflict and emotions
